Hey readers, I wanted to let you know about a new project I’ve been spinning up. This summer the Grateful Dead offshoot Dead & Company were scheduled to play 24 shows in the recently opened Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada. So far they’ve played 9 and scheduled an additional 6 for the first half of August.
I’ve been putting together a mixtape-blog-thing about the music of the Dead and the architecture of the Sphere, following a hunch I have that each can offer a fun lens into understanding the other.
Each mixtape is paired with an essay about buildings. You don’t need to be a trained architect or lifelong Deadhead to follow along. Notes and links to additional sources are provided for anyone who wants to learn more.
You can find that blog right here. If you’ve liked some of the things I’ve shared here on Premium Grind, I recommend starting with the Sing Me Back Home post, which offers some Grateful Dead origins and a history of Long Island’s “Big Duck” building.
The Future of Premium Grind
I’m going to keep this Substack live and will probably still post here from time to time, but I’ll be turning off payments indefinitely. As much as I appreciate—and I really really appreciate—those of you who have been throwing a few bucks my way to keep the Hustle happening, I don’t feel good about taking money when I’m Substacking this infrequently.
In the long term, I may be rewriting or revising some of the content previously shared here and migrating it to o-m-g.space. But I don’t intend to delete anything here so this remains as an archive of stuff, at least for a little while.
Hope all is well wherever you are!
